Overview

Understanding Cataracts

A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens inside the eye, which sits behind the iris and pupil. The lens, which is normally clear, gradually becomes opaque over time, reducing the amount and quality of light reaching the retina. This leads to progressively blurred vision, increased sensitivity to glare, and faded colour perception.

Cataracts are the most common cause of reversible vision loss worldwide. In the UK, more than half of people over 65 have some degree of cataract development. While cataracts typically develop slowly, they can eventually significantly impact quality of life, making activities like driving, reading, and recognising faces increasingly difficult.

The only effective treatment for cataracts is surgery to remove the clouded lens and replace it with a clear artificial lens implant (intraocular lens or IOL). Modern cataract surgery is one of the safest and most successful operations performed, with over 99% of patients experiencing improved vision.

At K Vision Centre, Miss Tina Khanam offers premium private cataract surgery with a choice of advanced lens implants, including multifocal, toric, and extended depth of focus (EDOF) options. Early assessment is recommended so that you can plan surgery at a time that suits you, rather than waiting until vision deteriorates significantly.

Symptoms

Signs You May Notice

If you are experiencing any of these signs, a consultation can help determine the cause and appropriate treatment.

  • Blurred or cloudy vision

Gradual loss of clarity, as if looking through a frosted or dirty window

  • Increased glare and halos

Particularly noticeable when driving at night or in bright sunlight

  • Faded or yellowed colours

Colours may appear less vibrant or take on a yellowish tinge

  • Difficulty reading

Even with updated glasses, small print becomes harder to see

  • Frequent prescription changes

Needing new glasses more often than expected may indicate cataract progression

Causes

What Causes This

  • Ageing — the most common cause, with lens proteins gradually breaking down over decades
  • Ultraviolet (UV) light exposure over many years
  • Diabetes mellitus, which accelerates lens clouding
  • Prolonged use of corticosteroid medications
  • Previous eye trauma or surgery

Risk Factors

Who Is at Risk

  • Age over 60
  • Family history of cataracts
  • Smoking
  • Diabetes
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Prolonged UV exposure without eye protection

Important

When to Seek Help

Consider booking a consultation if you notice any of the following:

  • Your vision is affecting daily activities such as driving or reading
  • You notice increasing glare or halos around lights at night
  • Colours appear faded or yellowish
  • Your optician has identified cataracts at your eye test

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

There is no need to wait until cataracts are "ripe" — this is an outdated concept. Surgery can be performed whenever your vision is affecting your quality of life or daily activities. Early surgery is often easier and safer.

No. Once the natural lens is removed and replaced, a cataract cannot recur. However, some patients develop posterior capsule opacity (PCO) months or years later, which causes similar symptoms. This is easily and painlessly treated with a YAG laser capsulotomy.

This depends on the lens implant chosen. Standard monofocal lenses provide clear distance vision but you will need reading glasses. Multifocal or EDOF lenses can significantly reduce or eliminate the need for glasses at all distances.
