Overview

Understanding the Procedure

YAG laser capsulotomy is a straightforward outpatient procedure used to treat posterior capsule opacification (PCO) — sometimes called "secondary cataract" or "after-cataract". PCO occurs when the thin membrane (capsule) behind the artificial lens implant becomes cloudy, causing blurred or hazy vision months or years after cataract surgery.

PCO is not a complication — it is a natural healing response that occurs in approximately 20-30% of patients within 2-5 years of cataract surgery. The YAG laser creates a small opening in the cloudy capsule, instantly restoring clear vision.

The procedure takes just 5-10 minutes, requires no anaesthesia beyond dilating drops, and vision improves almost immediately. It is a one-time treatment — PCO does not recur once treated.

Miss Tina Khanam performs YAG laser capsulotomy at her London clinic, whether you had your original cataract surgery with her or with another surgeon.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The procedure is completely painless. Your eyes are dilated with drops beforehand, and the laser treatment feels like gentle flashes of light.

Most patients notice clearer vision within a few hours. Some experience mild floaters for a few days as the capsule fragments settle.

No. Once the capsule has been opened with the YAG laser, PCO cannot recur in that eye.

Your pupils will be dilated for 4-6 hours after the procedure, so you should arrange alternative transport home. You can usually drive the following day.
