Overview

Understanding the Procedure

A pterygium is a benign, wedge-shaped growth of fleshy tissue on the conjunctiva (the clear membrane covering the white of the eye) that can extend onto the cornea. It is commonly caused by prolonged UV exposure and is more prevalent in people who spend significant time outdoors.

While small pterygia may only cause mild irritation or cosmetic concern, larger growths can distort the cornea causing astigmatism and blurred vision, or obstruct the line of sight if they grow across the pupil.

Miss Tina Khanam performs pterygium excision with conjunctival autograft — the gold-standard surgical technique that has the lowest recurrence rate (under 5%) compared to older methods. The pterygium is carefully removed and the area is covered with a thin graft of healthy conjunctival tissue taken from under the upper eyelid, secured with tissue glue.

Benefits

What This Means for You

  • Removes the growth and restores corneal clarity
  • Low recurrence rate with autograft technique (<5%)
  • Sutureless technique using tissue glue for comfort
  • Day-case procedure under local anaesthetic

Our Approach

Consultant-Led Care

Miss Khanam uses the conjunctival autograft technique with fibrin tissue glue (rather than sutures) for optimal comfort and cosmetic outcome. This approach significantly reduces recurrence rates compared to bare sclera excision.

Suitability

Is This Right for You?

  • Pterygium causing visual disturbance or significant astigmatism
  • Progressive pterygium growing towards the visual axis
  • Pterygium causing chronic irritation or discomfort
  • Cosmetic concern from a prominent pterygium

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

With the conjunctival autograft technique Miss Khanam uses, the recurrence rate is under 5%. This is significantly lower than older techniques. If recurrence occurs, repeat surgery is possible.

The surgery is performed under local anaesthetic so you will not feel pain during the procedure. Afterwards, the eye may feel gritty and uncomfortable for 1-2 weeks as it heals.

Most patients return to work within 1-2 weeks. The eye will be red for 2-4 weeks as the graft heals. Full cosmetic recovery takes 1-3 months.
