Presbyond Laser Blended Vision: Treating Reading Vision Without Multifocal Lenses

Presbyond uses laser technology to correct age-related reading vision loss. Discover how blended vision works, who it suits, and how it compares to multifocal lenses.

Presbyopia — the gradual loss of near focusing ability that affects virtually everyone over 45 — has traditionally been managed with reading glasses, varifocals, or multifocal contact lenses. Presbyond Laser Blended Vision, developed by Carl Zeiss, offers a surgical alternative that reduces or eliminates dependence on reading glasses by using a personalised laser profile to extend each eye's depth of focus.

Unlike traditional monovision (where one eye is corrected for distance and the other for near), Presbyond creates a customised blend zone in each eye. The dominant eye is optimised primarily for distance with some intermediate range, while the non-dominant eye is adjusted for near and intermediate vision. Crucially, both eyes retain functional distance vision, and the brain's natural fusion ability blends the two images seamlessly.

Clinical studies from the Eurotimes and Journal of Refractive Surgery report that over 95% of patients undergoing Presbyond achieve spectacle independence for daily activities including reading, using a smartphone, and working at a computer. Patient satisfaction scores consistently exceed 95%, which is notably higher than traditional monovision approaches.

The treatment itself uses the same femtosecond and excimer laser platforms as conventional LASIK, with the addition of a non-linear aspheric ablation profile unique to Presbyond. The procedure takes approximately 20 minutes for both eyes, with most patients noticing improved near and distance vision within 24 hours.

Who is an ideal candidate? Presbyond works best for patients aged 45 to 65 who are frustrated by reading glasses and want a permanent solution. It can correct concurrent myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism alongside the presbyopia correction. Patients who have previously been told they are unsuitable for standard laser eye surgery due to their age may find Presbyond is the solution they have been waiting for.

There are limitations to acknowledge. Presbyond is not suitable for patients who require exceptional close-focus precision — such as watchmakers or microsurgeons — or those who have advanced cataracts (lens replacement surgery would be more appropriate in this case). A tolerance test during your consultation will confirm whether your visual system adapts well to blended vision.

At K Vision Centre, Miss Tina Khanam performs a detailed binocular vision assessment and Presbyond simulation during your consultation to ensure you will achieve the balanced, comfortable vision you expect. Presbyond is available from £1,495 per eye, with interest-free finance options and all aftercare included.

If reading glasses are limiting your lifestyle, book a Presbyond consultation at our Harley Street, Spire Gatwick Park, or Spire St Anthony's clinics to discover whether this life-changing treatment is right for you.
