CAIRS – Allogenic Corneal Rings (KeraNatural)

CAIRS uses sterilised human donor corneal rings (KeraNatural), implanted with a femtosecond laser, to reshape the cornea and improve vision in keratoconus — a minimally invasive, tissue-friendly alternative to corneal transplant.

Understanding the Risks

As with any surgical procedure, CAIRS carries some risks. The majority of patients experience a significant improvement in vision without complications, but it is important to understand the possible risks and to follow all post-operative instructions carefully.

Pain and discomfort in the first few days

Mitigation: Anti-inflammatory (steroid) eye drops are provided; usually settles within a few days

Glare and light sensitivity

Mitigation: Often temporary, though glare can occasionally persist

Dry eye and blepharitis

Mitigation: Lubricating drops and lid care; usually manageable

Rejection of the donor ring

Mitigation: Careful donor-tissue screening and steroid/immunosuppressant drops; reported rejection rates range from 0–23%. Signs include pain, redness and blurred vision

Keratitis (corneal infection or inflammation)

Mitigation: Needs prompt treatment; report eye pain, redness or light sensitivity without delay

Corneal melting or perforation

Reduced or lost vision

Lack of effect, or reduced effect over time
