Treatment
CAIRS – Allogenic Corneal Rings (KeraNatural)
CAIRS uses sterilised human donor corneal rings (KeraNatural), implanted with a femtosecond laser, to reshape the cornea and improve vision in keratoconus — a minimally invasive, tissue-friendly alternative to corneal transplant.
Risks & Safety
Understanding the Risks
As with any surgical procedure, CAIRS carries some risks. The majority of patients experience a significant improvement in vision without complications, but it is important to understand the possible risks and to follow all post-operative instructions carefully.
Pain and discomfort in the first few days
Mitigation: Anti-inflammatory (steroid) eye drops are provided; usually settles within a few days
Glare and light sensitivity
Mitigation: Often temporary, though glare can occasionally persist
Dry eye and blepharitis
Mitigation: Lubricating drops and lid care; usually manageable
Rejection of the donor ring
Mitigation: Careful donor-tissue screening and steroid/immunosuppressant drops; reported rejection rates range from 0–23%. Signs include pain, redness and blurred vision
Keratitis (corneal infection or inflammation)
Mitigation: Needs prompt treatment; report eye pain, redness or light sensitivity without delay
Corneal melting or perforation
Mitigation: Rare; may require additional surgery to repair
Reduced or lost vision
Mitigation: Degree depends on the pre-operative condition, surgical technique and aftercare; in some cases vision loss may be permanent
Lack of effect, or reduced effect over time
Mitigation: The treatment may not have enough effect or may reduce over time; further treatment may be considered
Ptosis (drooping upper eyelid)
Mitigation: Associated with prolonged steroid drop use or an eyelid clip; usually settles
