Risks & Safety

Understanding the Risks

PRK and LASEK are well-established procedures with decades of safety data. As surface treatments that do not involve creating a corneal flap, they carry no risk of flap-related complications — one of the key advantages over LASIK.

Miss Khanam will discuss all potential risks openly during your consultation. Informed consent is central to her practice.

Post-operative discomfort

commonmild

Mitigation: Expected for 2-3 days as the surface heals. Managed with pain relief drops, oral medication, and the protective bandage contact lens.

Temporary haze

uncommonmild

Mitigation: Mild corneal haze can occur during healing but typically clears within 1-3 months. Mitomycin-C is applied during surgery to minimise this risk.

Dry eyes

commonmild

Mitigation: Typically less severe than after LASIK as no corneal flap is created. Managed with lubricating drops during the healing period.

Under-correction or over-correction

uncommonmild

Mitigation: A small residual prescription may remain. Enhancement treatment can be considered once healing is complete.

Infection

rareserious

Mitigation: The bandage contact lens and antibiotic drops protect the healing surface. Strict hygiene and follow-up attendance are essential.

Delayed visual recovery

commonmild

Mitigation: Vision takes longer to stabilise than LASIK — this is normal and expected. Full visual clarity is typically reached by 1-3 months.

Complications & What to Expect

Serious complications from surface laser treatments are rare. The absence of a corneal flap means there is no risk of flap displacement or flap-related complications, which is why PRK is often preferred for patients in physically demanding occupations.

Miss Khanam uses mitomycin-C during the procedure to minimise the risk of corneal haze, and provides close follow-up during the critical healing period. Her careful patient selection and advanced surgical technique contribute to consistently excellent outcomes.

If any concern arises during your recovery, Miss Khanam is available for direct contact and can arrange prompt review.
