ICL - Implantable Contact Lens
EVO ICL for high prescriptions — a reversible, maintenance-free alternative to laser eye surgery with built-in UV protection.
Risks & Safety
Understanding the Risks
ICL surgery has an outstanding safety profile, particularly for patients with high prescriptions where the risk-benefit ratio of laser surgery may be less favourable. The procedure is reversible — the lens can be removed or exchanged if needed.
Miss Khanam will provide a thorough explanation of all potential risks during your consultation.
Temporary increased eye pressure
Mitigation: Usually resolves within hours of surgery. Monitored at your post-operative check and managed with drops if needed.
Glare and halos
Mitigation: Modern V4c and EVO ICL designs with a central port have significantly reduced this compared to older models.
Dry eyes
Mitigation: ICL causes less dry eye than LASIK because no corneal tissue is removed or reshaped.
Early cataract formation
Mitigation: Rare with modern sizing and design. If it occurs, the ICL is removed and the cataract treated with standard surgery.
Infection (endophthalmitis)
Mitigation: Strict sterile technique and prophylactic antibiotics minimise this risk.
ICL rotation (toric only)
Mitigation: Precise pre-operative sizing minimises this risk. If rotation occurs, the lens can be repositioned.

Complications & What to Expect
One of the key advantages of ICL surgery is its reversibility. Unlike laser eye surgery, which permanently alters the cornea, an ICL can be removed or replaced if circumstances change. This makes it one of the most flexible refractive procedures available.
The latest EVO Visian ICL design features a central aquaport that allows natural fluid circulation within the eye, significantly reducing the risk of cataract formation compared to earlier ICL models.
Miss Khanam's careful patient selection and precise lens sizing, combined with her meticulous surgical technique, deliver consistently excellent results with a low complication rate.
