Treatment
ICL - Implantable Contact Lens
EVO ICL for high prescriptions — a reversible, maintenance-free alternative to laser eye surgery with built-in UV protection.
Am I Suitable?
Suitability Criteria
ICL surgery is particularly suited to patients with moderate to high prescriptions who are not ideal candidates for laser eye surgery. It is one of the most effective procedures for correcting high myopia.
Miss Khanam will assess your suitability through a comprehensive evaluation including measurements of the space inside your eye where the ICL sits.
Ideal Candidates
- High myopia (-6.00 to -20.00 dioptres)
ICL excels at correcting high short-sightedness where LASIK would require removing too much corneal tissue.
- Thin corneas unsuitable for LASIK or PRK
Because ICL sits inside the eye, corneal thickness is not a limiting factor.
- Adults aged 21-45
ICL is ideal for younger adults with high prescriptions. The natural lens is preserved, maintaining accommodation.
- Moderate hyperopia (+1.00 to +10.00)
ICL can correct long-sightedness beyond the range treatable by LASIK.
- Patients wanting a reversible option
Unlike LASIK, ICL can be removed if needed — offering peace of mind.
Contraindications
- Insufficient anterior chamber depth
There must be adequate space between the cornea and the natural lens for the ICL to sit safely. This is measured precisely during assessment.
- Low endothelial cell count
The corneal endothelium must be healthy to support the ICL long-term. Cell count is measured during assessment.
- Cataracts or early lens changes
If the natural lens is already clouding, lens replacement surgery is more appropriate than ICL.
- Uncontrolled glaucoma
Raised intraocular pressure must be managed before ICL implantation.
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
Hormonal changes can temporarily alter your prescription.
Assessment
How We Assess Your Suitability
Your ICL suitability assessment includes detailed measurements of your anterior chamber depth, lens vault, endothelial cell count, and white-to-white corneal diameter. These measurements determine the correct ICL size and vault.
Miss Khanam also performs corneal topography, pachymetry, OCT imaging, and a thorough eye health examination. The assessment takes approximately 60 minutes.
Once suitability is confirmed, the custom ICL is ordered from the manufacturer (STAAR Surgical). This typically takes 1-2 weeks. Miss Khanam will explain the process and answer all your questions during the consultation.
