Risks & Safety
Understanding the Risks
Lens replacement surgery uses the same proven technique as cataract surgery — one of the safest operations in medicine. The procedure has been performed millions of times worldwide with excellent safety data.
Because the procedure is elective, the threshold for proceeding must be high. Miss Khanam will discuss all risks thoroughly and only recommend surgery when the expected benefits clearly outweigh them.
Posterior capsule opacity (PCO)
Mitigation: Treated quickly and painlessly with a 5-minute YAG laser. Included in your package for 2 years.
Dry eyes
Mitigation: Temporary and managed with lubricating drops. Typically resolves within a few weeks.
Glare, halos, or starbursts
Mitigation: More common with multifocal lenses. Most patients adapt within 3-6 months as neuroadaptation occurs.
Residual prescription
Mitigation: Advanced biometry reduces this risk. A minor residual error can be corrected with glasses or laser enhancement.
Retinal detachment
Mitigation: Slightly higher risk in very short-sighted patients. Pre-operative retinal assessment identifies at-risk eyes.
Infection (endophthalmitis)
Mitigation: Strict sterile technique and intracameral antibiotics minimise this risk to approximately 1 in 1,000.

Complications & What to Expect
The safety profile of lens replacement surgery mirrors that of cataract surgery, which has been continuously refined over decades. Serious complications are rare when the procedure is performed by an experienced surgeon in an accredited facility.
Miss Khanam takes a cautious approach to patient selection. If your eye anatomy or prescription suggests an elevated risk, she will discuss alternative options or recommend monitoring rather than proceeding.
A key advantage of lens replacement is that, unlike laser eye surgery, it eliminates the possibility of cataracts developing in the future — the artificial lens cannot cloud.
