Frequently Asked Questions
Cataract surgery is a significant decision, and we want you to feel fully informed before proceeding. Below are the most common questions we hear from patients considering cataract surgery.
Miss Khanam is always happy to answer additional questions during your consultation.
The best lens depends on your lifestyle, visual goals, and eye health. Miss Khanam will discuss all options during your consultation. Monofocal lenses give excellent distance vision (reading glasses still needed). Multifocal or EDOF lenses can reduce or eliminate the need for glasses at all distances. Toric lenses correct astigmatism.
Most patients notice improved vision within 24–48 hours. You can resume most daily activities the following day, though you should avoid heavy lifting and swimming for 2–4 weeks. Vision continues to stabilise over 4–6 weeks.
Bilateral same-day cataract surgery (ISBCS) is available for suitable patients and is increasingly common. However, most patients prefer to have one eye treated at a time, with the second eye done 1–2 weeks later. Miss Khanam will advise on the best approach for you.
Private surgery offers shorter waiting times, a wider choice of premium lens implants, consultant-led care (rather than trainee-led), and dedicated post-operative follow-up. NHS cataract surgery typically uses standard monofocal lenses and may involve longer waiting lists.
Cataract surgery is one of the safest operations performed, with a serious complication rate of less than 1%. Potential risks include infection (endophthalmitis), posterior capsule opacity (easily treated with YAG laser), and retinal detachment (very rare). Miss Khanam will discuss all risks during your consultation.
