Am I Suitable?
Suitability Criteria
Cataract surgery is suitable for the vast majority of patients once cataracts are affecting their quality of life. There is no need to wait until cataracts are "ripe" — modern surgery is safer and easier when performed earlier.
Miss Khanam will assess your suitability and recommend the optimal timing and lens choice based on your individual needs.
Ideal Candidates
- Cataracts affecting daily activities
If your vision is making driving, reading, or recognising faces difficult, surgery can restore clarity.
- Patients wanting to reduce glasses dependence
Premium lens implants can correct distance, intermediate, and near vision simultaneously.
- Patients with significant astigmatism
Toric lenses correct astigmatism at the same time as removing the cataract.
- Those experiencing glare and halos
Night driving difficulty from cataracts is a common reason patients seek surgery.
- Patients who have been monitored by their optician
Regular optician visits help track cataract progression and identify the right time for referral.
Contraindications
- Active eye infection or inflammation
Any active condition must be treated and resolved before surgery can be planned.
- Uncontrolled glaucoma
Glaucoma should be stabilised before cataract surgery, though combined procedures are sometimes appropriate.
- Significant macular disease
Conditions such as advanced macular degeneration may limit the visual improvement achievable from cataract surgery.
- Unable to lie flat for 20 minutes
The procedure requires you to lie comfortably on your back. We will discuss any mobility concerns in advance.
Assessment
How We Assess Your Suitability
Your pre-operative assessment includes detailed biometry measurements to calculate the precise lens power for your eye, corneal topography, OCT imaging of the retina, and a comprehensive eye health examination.
Miss Khanam will discuss your visual goals and daily activities to recommend the most appropriate lens implant. She will explain the advantages and limitations of each option clearly.
The assessment takes approximately 60 minutes. Please bring your current glasses and a list of any medications you take. You will need someone to drive you home as your pupils will be dilated.
