As with any surgery, there are risks to be aware of. Miss Khanam will discuss these thoroughly with you before proceeding, ensuring you feel fully informed and confident in your decision.
Posterior capsule opacity (PCO)
Mitigation: Affects 10-20% of patients months or years later. Easily and painlessly treated with a 5-minute YAG laser capsulotomy.
Dry eyes
Mitigation: Temporary dryness is common after surgery and resolves with lubricating drops over a few weeks.
Glare and halos
Mitigation: More common with multifocal lenses. Usually adapts within weeks as the brain adjusts. Miss Khanam will discuss this during lens selection.
Residual refractive error
Mitigation: Advanced biometry minimises this risk. Minor residual prescription can be managed with glasses or laser enhancement.
Infection (endophthalmitis)
Mitigation: Risk is approximately 1 in 1,000. Intracameral antibiotics at the end of surgery significantly reduce this risk.
Retinal detachment
Mitigation: Slightly increased risk in highly short-sighted patients. Pre-operative retinal examination identifies at-risk eyes.
